Solid and worth every penny spent

Pine View Grocery

You’ve got to say something about a band that names its debut album after what I would assume is their neighborhood grocery store and I’m happy to say that all I have to say are good things. Glen Closer’s debut album Pine View Grocery is solid and worth every penny spent.

Hailing from the shores of New Jersey, band members Johnna White, Joe Rubin and Jim Baeszler just decided to play their music on a whim one night at a local bar. To their delight, the patrons took their heads out of their beers to take notice. And with the band’s brand of smooth alt rock grooves and toe-tapping sound, I wouldn’t have thought it could have been otherwise.

Starting with the opening track “Madison,” Glen Closer spins a total of 11 tracks of musical splendor and entertainment. One of the most outstanding songs has to be “It’s So Her,” which features Johnna’s dynamic vocals that are soft and rough at the same time, if that’s possible. However, the best part of this song is Jim’s guitar playing, which gives the song the harder edge it needs to help balance out Johnna’s vocals. Jim’s brilliant guitar work is also highlighted in many of the album’s other tracks, most notably the rollicking “Ditty #1” and the REM-sounding “Looking Down at the Sun.”
